Fic is better than punching things.

With stress building from the Unknown Future of Unknown, I have once again channeled my energies into pr0n. Just a wee draught to slake my naughty Gibbs thirst. Hopefully now I can settle down and face the UFoU with a clear mind. (HA.) Or maybe I can at least focus on my corrections a little more. Need to clear up a ton of frustrating loose ends which sometimes make me want to punch things. Or, as is safer, take it out on my hot, fictional boys. Sorry, Jethro, but it's your turn tonight. :D

So, without further ado, for those who can manage to get to anyone else's postings amidst all this LJ cloak and dagger craziness, I humbly present...

Title: Self-Inflicted Punishment
Author: Lukoni
Fandom: NCIS
Pairings: Mention of Gibbs/Dinozzo and Dinozzo/Barrett; OMC/Gibbs
Word Count: 770
Summary: Gibbs feels things slipping out of control, and needs some help getting it back.
Rating: R
Warnings: Brief, non-explicit M/M BDSM. Mild angst.
Notes: Tag to episode 8x20 (“Two-Faced”), so probably some spoilers there. Just a little Gibbs POV to help me sort out the weirdness of this latest ep.

Hmmmm....

Well, now that my thesis is winding down, I finally have time to poke my nose back into fandom. And since LJ is currently flipping out, and I've known for eons that some very talented writers have relocated over here, it's finally time to establish some sort of presence. Will try to get the cross-posting thing to work, so I don't have to maintain two active journals. But we'll see. My tech savvy seems to be dwindling with age. (Am about to be forty - one foot in the grave, here!)

Am trying to import old entries. Fingers crossed that success WILL BE MINE!!!! Muahahaaaaaa! In the meantime, time to make some new icons!! Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

Moron Prize of the Day

Ugh. So I am finally finishing the stupid Masters from Hell and have no definite plans of what to do afterwards. There is one research fellowship that I came across that would be ABSOLUTELY PERFECT as far as my research interests go and all that. Application due on March 31st. No problem. Two recommendations due from profs due March 31st. No problem, right? My prof says 'just email me a reminder of the date and email address to send it to." So what do I do??? I tell her it is due Friday - March 31st! FUCK ME. Friday is SOOOOOOOOO April 1st. BLARGHHHHHHHHHHHH. So maybe they won't disqualify me for a rec coming in 1 day late, but maybe I just shot myself in the foot like the giant fuckup I've always been.

Sigh. I hate it when I sabotage myself with my own stupidity. And it's not like I screwed up 1 application out of 5 or 10, it's the ONLY one I am submitting. These stupid opportunities don't grow on trees. GAH! Oh well, I would just let it slide and focus on Plan B, but I don't actually have a plan B. Guess I'd better get on with putting that together. *crickets chirping* Right, yep, I'm all over it.

On the plus side, I will likely have more time to write fic again soon. Or maybe write that Great American Screenplay I've been planning. :P Or start exercising. Or practice cooking. Or volunteer for some worthwhile organization. Or just be the same old loser I've always been. Bah. Back to the drawing board.

If Life Is a Giant Waffle, I Am a Square Saturated by Maple Syrup

It's really more like my mind is a giant waffle - should I stay here and try to do the PhD? Should I apply somewhere else for a PhD? Would I even make a decent professor? Should I give up on that idea altogether, settle for the masters and get a non-academic job? What kind of job? Am I qualified for anything? Can I compete in this tight market as a 40-year-old woman who has been out of the work force for six years? Should I just become a Starbucks barista (if I am not over the age limit)? Become a homeless crackhead? Professional dogsitter - the only true skill I have picked up in grad school? Bah. Fuck. It. All.

In order to combat the suffocating syrup that is setting into the waffle squares of my mind, here is yet another fanfic. Because even if I am wasting my life, I can at least try and entertain a few others along the way. Not that this story is all that entertaining. No smex, no jokes, no madcap adventures. Must be off my game. One of these days I'll get back to the smex. And to Trowa - my beautiful, stretchy, long-legged mute. I have a half-finished story with him and Duo which makes me laugh like a maniac every time I re-read it, but I just haven't been able to figure out the ending and so it languishes. Alas. But I keep it on my horizon because I love it so. Although, I fear by the time I finish it, there will only be three fans of GW left! :)

In the meantime...

Title: Worse for Wear
Author: Lukoni
Fandom: NCIS
Characters: Gibbs, Tony (friendship), mention of Mike Franks
Word Count: ca. 950

Warnings: Some angstiness; mild hurt/comfort.

Notes: Set early in season 4, soon after Gibbs decides to return to NCIS permanently. Not intended to be slashy, but can be looked at as pre-slash if the reader so desires (we aim to please here at Lukoni’s Underground Lair of Escapist Fantasy).

10 Ways Watching Tennis Is Just Like Reading Fanfic

I've enjoyed watching tennis for many years now - two hot, sweaty, well-toned men battling it out for hours to find out who will be on top. What's not to love?? But for some reason it totally escaped me until today how much a match is really just a very long fanfic in disguise and with more applause. So without further adieu, here is my list of....

10 Ways Watching Tennis Is Just Like Reading Fanfic
(Note that all items in quotes were taken directly from commentators.)

10) The terminology says it: Advantage. Hold. Break point. Luv
9) "He can adapt and find power from tough positions."
8) Man on receiving end generally bends over and waits for it while server prepares.
7) "His backhand stroke is much better than his forehand stroke."
6) Orgies Doubles: Mens (mm/mm), Ladies (ff/ff), and Mixed (m/f/m/f).
5) All those grunts of exertion.
4) Switching Ends.
3) "As soon as he gets a defensive play, he pounces and scores."
2) Fresh Balls.
1) "He only takes one ball at a time like a lot of the ladies do."

Update

Huh. Can't believe I haven't posted in a year! Have really missed posting but haven't felt up to it. And now it looks like most of the Kool Kids have migrated to Dreamwidth. But that's what I get for dropping the ball. C'est la vie. So what has la vie been like lately? Perhaps a quick list will cover it.

Brief peek out of Thesisland

Well, according to lj stats, it has been 11 weeks since I last posted! Yoiks. I didn't go into the field this summer - stayed in town to finish my thesis. Have so far made a good deal of progress, though the end of August is hurtling down a wormhole and straight at my head. Must brace myself for impact. Or just finish writing. That would make me happy, and is not an unreasonable goal, really. Hooray for some things. Financial crisis has only been partially averted - much hangs on pending job application. *crosses fingers* Diverting my anxiety with fic has only been partially successful. :P

Title: Juxtaposition 1
Author: Lukoni
Fandom: Kyo Kara Maoh!
Characters: Gwendal, Gegenhuber (no pairings)
Word Count: 750

Rating: G
Warnings: Introspection. Mild angst?

Why don't I hold your hair for an hour or so, then wrap you in scratchy blanket?

So, in the course of my usual I'm-overwhelmed-so-let's-go-drown-in-fanfic coping mechanism, I finally reached the breaking point with several fanfic tropes. And of course must now expound upon them for a bit, just to check my Reality Meter with other normal (more or less) adults.

No. 1. What the H*** is up with the hair holding while vomiting?????? Eeeeew? Not only would I never do this for a friend/lover (because the sound of someone vomiting makes me feel like vomiting too), but I would never want anyone to do it for me. If I'm puking, be it from the flu or too much alcohol, I want to be completely, totally, 100-percent ALONE! Hands off! Get OUT! No solicitous back rubbing or hair holding. I'm already stressed enough without worrying about what a miserable time my friend/lover is having. And look, I've had long hair for over 25 years and I tell you right now I have NEVER ONCE vomited on it! Why does everyone else write about this????? Please tell me! Is this a common practice I've missed out by being a misanthropic recluse? Have I never been quite drunk enough to need assistance while barfing my guts out? Help!

No. 2. Or so. This lovely phrase is designed for getting across the fact that a given measurement is not exact. But sometimes it gets used so often that it just distracts me. If given a choice between 'Trowa waited for Quatre in the Jell-o pool for an hour or so before licking himself clean and leaving with a frustrated sigh' and 'Trowa waited in the Jello-pool for an hour before...' I would definitely take the latter. Most likely Trowa is not wearing his watch in the Jell-o pool and I can easily infer that he was not there for exactly 60 minutes without ruining the flow for the added 'or so'. It's not that 'or so' never has its place, but it just isn't necessary every time there is an indeterminate measurement. And what about 'about' or 'almost' or 'nearly' for some variety? 'Quatre arrived, out of breath, nearly twenty minutes later, wondering whether he would ever be forgiven for getting stuck in a board meeting on their anniversary.' Something about 'or so' messes with the meter and knocks me out of the flow of the narrative. Is it just me?

No. 3. Scratchy. I admit I have a strange hang-up about this word. It just plunges me into the world of being 5-year-old whiny child again. I have no idea why I think grownups should not use this word, but they do, so I'm doing my best to accept that. But why, why, WHY must all fictional blankets be scratchy??????????? I have experienced a number of blankets in my life, and they are not all scratchy. There are soft ones, stiff ones, threadbare ones, clammy ones. So many choices! And if they are itch-inducing, there are other options, such as rough or prickly that one could substitute for a little variety. I'm just saying. Maybe we are discriminating against blanket-kind here by only focusing on one?

Anyway, that's it for now. Not trying to be too negative or anything, just, as I said, in need of a reality check. If anyone has pet peeves of their own, feel free to share!

Anime Hangover

So I had a most unproductive thesis-writing weekend, due to spending most of it sucking down all 26 episodes of Mushishi. (Curse you Hulu!!). So now I've still got the theme song running through my head nonstop and as a little hair-of-the-dog therapy have started reading the manga. BAAAAAAAD GIRL! Haven't gone on such a bender in quite some time. I'm a total sucker for good supernatural/paranormal tales (Requiem from the Darkness, anyone?). Really must get back to reality ASAP. But hey, now I can add yet another one-eyed protagonist to my list of hotties (it really is getting way too long - what is it with anime and eye loss????)

In other news, the humidity is back with a vengeance, I'm still heading towards an impending financial meltdown, I've applied for a job, I have no idea what I'm doing next semester if I don't get that job, and my car is in the shop. Oh boy. Guess that means it's time for another fic. Why not? Still no inspiration on the Trowa front. *hugs him* Can't seem to think of anything that hasn't already been done a dozen times and better than I could. So a little more Gwendal love to tide me over. And maybe someday I'll finish the Roy/Havoc piece I started a millennium ago. Or perhaps my thesis?? *raps knuckles with imaginary ruler*

Title: Gwendal’s Package
Author: Lukoni
Fandom: Kyo Kara Maoh!
Characters: Cheri, Gwendal
Word Count: ca. 980
Summary: Why is everony making passes at Gwendal?? And what can his do to help?
Rating: PG (for “adult situations” - I've always loved that one!)
Warnings: Some naughty thoughts? Also devious moms and embarrassed sons.
Spoilers: None – completely made up back story.
Notes: Finally, a humorous story for this fandom!! It was inspired by a screen cap from episode 47, which reveals that Gwendal seems to be surprisingly well-endowed for an anime character. Resistance was futile. Also, not beta read, so all mistakes are my fault and corrections are always welcome.

Still slacking

Yup, I should be working on my thesis today (like every other day) and instead I wrote another story. But I'm hoping that getting this one out of my head will make more room for thesisy stuff. The brain works that way, right?

Title: Depature
Author: Lukoni
Fandom: Kyo Kara Maoh!
Characters: Gwendal
Word Count: ca. 1300
Summary: Gwendal prepares to leave his family behind as illness catches up with him.
Rating: G
Warnings: Impending character death
Spoilers: Not really.
Notes: Set perhaps a year or two after the end of the series, though I haven’t actually finished watching then 3rd season, so if this contradicts anything revealed there, my apologies.

Gin and tonic and Disney

Freaking out about impending financial black hole, so I'm spending the evening drinking G&T's, formatting a thesis chapter, and watching Beauty and the Beast. And once that's over, I'm thinking... Sleeping Beauty. (And another G&T of course.) Is it wrong of me to think that one of the hottest scenes in film history is when the Prince in Sleeping Beauty gets captured by the horde of Maleficent's minions?? Followed closely by the scene where she taunts him in the dungeon? Apparently I've had the bondage kink from a very young age! Can I blame it all on Walt?

Random Pet Peeve #168: People Used to Have Names, You Know

Okay, so I'm being old and crotchety here, but hey, that's what people do when they are surrounded by the next generation, right? So, I am a Dr. Who fan from way back, and I've pretty much seen every pre-hiatus episode that's available (including the unfinished Douglas Adams scripted Shada). I've watched a few of the new eps but haven't fallen in love yet - some things I like (Captain Jack - yum) and some things I don't (Dr. in luuuuv - icky). Whatever. That's not my problem. My problem is that I still remember those old discussions that inevitably involved the question 'Who's your favorite Doctor?' Lots of 'Tom Baker' and 'Jon Pertwee', some 'Peter Davison', very few 'Colin Baker'... but it was all names - of people, of actors who portrayed a character, who brought life and personality and individuality to each regeneration. Now I know all these younger folks who are completely into the new doctors and it's all numbers. 'I like ten.' 'Did you see that one with nine?' 'Which doctor was that? Three?' ARRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH. Fuck that. It's so.... I dunno... reductionary and depersonalizing or something. Or maybe it just represents the fans considering the doctor as a single, whole character, divorced from the medium of television. Which I guess shouldn't be a bad thing, I do that myself with other fandoms, but somehow in this case it still annoys the fuck out of me. I don't know why, but it does, and hence I shake my cane at humanity once more.

On a lighter note, I was searching through old mix tapes (yes, tapes) looking for songs to convert to digital, and rediscovered Touch and Go's Would You...?. This song NEVER fails to bring a smile to my face. If you aren't familiar with it, do a quick Youtube search (no official video, but several amateur jobs - don't watch 'em, just listen). It is SOOOO worth it. :)

Assassination Foiled by Couch, or Why One Should Always Invest in Quality Furniture...

Couldn't resist sharing yet another bizarre tidbit that, to my twisted mind, was insanely funny. All you normal folks out there may not agree, of course, but such is life... and death...

And thus Tacitus speaks of Nero's attempt to have his mother, Agrippina, done in:
"The ship had made no great way, and two of Agrippina's household were in attendance, Crepereius Gallus standing not far from the tiller, while Acerronia, bending over the feet of the recumbent princess, recalled exultantly the penitence of the son and the re-entry of the mother into favour. Suddenly the signal was given: the canopy above them, which had been heavily weighted with lead, dropped, and Crepereius was crushed and killed on the spot. Agrippina and Acerronia were saved by the height of the couch-sides which, as it happened, were too solid to give way under the impact."

Bwahahahaaaa! Curses, I would have gotten away with it, too, if it hadn't been for you meddling... couch arms.

Ruh roh, Shaggy! (Ok, now I'm picturing Agrippina being saved by a clumsy dog and the Harlem Globe Trotters. I think it's time for me to take a wee break!!)
