Ok. I'm here. In Texas. Bush country. Ugh. Somebody save me!!! What am I doing here? Mired in debt, not-so-proud owner (well, mortgage-payer) on a condo that needs a new air conditioning unit, new bathroom floor and has a fridge that smells worse than the trash compactor Luke almost got eaten in. Sigh. Part of me is ready to pack back up (though that implies I've finished unpacking, which I haven't) and run, not walk, back to New England. Part of me knows that I can't afford that so I'm stuck here. grrrrrr. At least classes start next week so I can start thinking about school things and further flog myself over my mental incapacity to handle all that too.

Boy, what a ball of sunshine I am! But then I never have been one so why start now? The scariest thing about this place is that it's a city here only because the university's here and the university has 45,000 students of which only about 8,000 are grad students. That's right, that there are 38,000 undergrads wandering around out there, mostly between the ages of 18-22. AARRRRGGGHHHHH!!! I never really thought about how comfortable I had been with my 30- to 45-year-old friends until I was suddenly in a sea of under-25's. Even my fellow newbie Antho grad students are only around 25! YIKES. We have nothing in common except our general interest in the subject. It's so weird. And it's not that I feel old in the damn-I'm-so-out-of-it sort of way. Rather I feel old in the I've-already-been-there-don-that-and-want-to-move-on sort of way. Presumably there will be some older students in my program, but hell, one of my Profs is younger than me, so it's going to be really strange. Thank God for email and airplanes is all I've got to say!!

Some good news from Crazyville, it's not 100% pro-Bush. Saw a bumper sticker yesterday (on a Texas car) that read:

Aggies don't lie
Or tolerate people who do
Defeat Bush/Cheney.

Yeah!! (Yes, anyone who goes to Texas A&M is called an Aggie. Don't ask.)
