Well, it’s official. I’m coming home. Grrrrrr. Stupid body. My arm is still acting funny after diving (and other forms of strenuous exercise) and my tummy is still not happy with me at nights, so my prof suggested perhaps it would be better if I went home where I could see a doctor who speaks my own language and has regular access both to me and to spiffy testing resources. I couldn’t disagree, but I was sorely disappointed to have to leave the project early. Still, it would only stress me out more to stay out there and wait, wondering if it will go away or get worse. And if it’s something easily treatable I’d like to get it treated asap.

So now I get to hang out in Bodrum for a couple days - cool (though really it’s very hot). Might go see Transformers just cuz. I was hoping to pick up an English copy of Harry Potter to send back to my friends at camp but local ex-pat assures me that I will never find one here. Izmir, yes, Bodrum, no. Whatever. It’s Harry freakin’ Potter. Surely there’s a kiosk on Mars selling copies in 25 languages as we speak! I’ll check a couple places anyway just in case. My own personal challenge will come in traveling all the way back to Texas without encountering any spoilers! Could be tricky - when in airports I will be sure to keep at least a 10 meter buffer between me and any 12-old-girl I see. And arm myself with headphones for the plane in case there’s one seated behind me (although it’s usually a 3-year-old boy with a penchant for kicking the seat in front of him...).

Another annoyance is that even after getting my tickets changed I still have to get up at 3 am to go catch my flight to Istanbul just so that I can get from Istanbul to Frankfurt by 10:30 am so that I can catch my connection to the states at .... yup, you guessed it, 8:30 am the next day. WTF???? Grrrrrr. Can the travel agent honestly tell me that that was the only option available? And to top it all off, I planned to stay over in Mainz so I can go to the ship museum there which was a great idea when this was planned for August, but now I will be there on a Monday, which we all know is universal Museums Are Closed Day. FUCK ALL. Though apparently the Gutenberg Museum will be open. Not as cool (or useful to my research) as Roman ships, but I guess it will have to do. Sheesh. I must have pissed off someone big time to incur this much karmic retribution!

And so, in order to cheer myself up last week, and, inspired by Raletha’s lovely 2x3 tattooing fic (The Artist) that I encountered on my last trip to town, I went back to an old unfinished 2x3 that I’ve been writing off and on (mostly off) for almost two years now and started working on it again. Woohoo! It’s still not done of course (boo!) but I did come across a chunk that got completely cut out since it veered off in a direction that was totally not in line with the story, but..... I kinda like as a stand-alone snippet. So I figured I’d post it as a special thanks to [livejournal.com profile] raletha (not that she wrote it for me personally, but still, such a hawt fic deserves thanks) and also as thanks to all you guys who have read and replied to my whiny posts over the last few weeks! You all totally rock!!! I really appreciate everyone’s support!

Title: Random Snippet
Pairing: 2x3
Rating: PG or less.
Word Count: 740.
Summary: Duo tells his lover a story in a time of crisis.
Warnings: Sappy, sappy, cheezy and sappy. Oh, and did I mention corny? Also, in the story from which this developed Duo has some hard feelings toward Heero who rejected him rather coldly - things get resolved later on in the story, but at the point when this snippet was supposed to take place Duo’s still not too happy with him. No mindless character bashing is intended!

“Duo?” Trowa asked hesitantly. “Am I… just… Heero Lite to you?” The pain tore at Duo’s heart and he hastened to reassure his lover.

“Of course not. You are Trowa Perfect,” he said, and kissed him gently, trying not to jostle the wounded man. Trowa blinked lethargically. He didn’t look entirely convinced, but that could just be the exhaustion and the blood loss. Duo struggled to find a way to express his feelings in words. For a man of many, it was suddenly hard to find the ones that really counted. An image formed in his head, one that encompassed everything he felt about where he’d been and where he was now, and he smiled. Smoothing the auburn bangs gently back from Trowa’s forehead, he spoke.

“A Heero and a Trowa are traveling across the world on a great journey to the land of Destiny. One day they reach the shores of a wide and raging sea. It blocks their way but they must cross it to continue on their quest. The Heero rages and glares and stamps his foot. He has no patience for this obstacle that stops his progress. He growls and he threatens and he pours all his anger into the Sea until it quakes and cowers and opens a path through its quivering waters. And the Heero stomps through the gap, squelching in the mud and squashing dead fish and cutting his knees on coral but he doesn’t care because he is moving toward his goal and that’s all that counts. The Trowa stands at the shore of the Sea and he gazes calmly at its sun-kissed waves. And breathes deeply of the sea air. He closes his eyes, feeling the sea breeze on his face. And sticks out his tongue, tasting the sea salt on his lips. And he steps forward into the water and the Sea takes him in its arms and carries him across its great expanse. And it sets him down gently on the shores of Destiny.” Duo continued to stroke Trowa’s forehead, as he gazed down at his lover, willing him to hold on until the ambulance arrived. Faint sounds of sirens were just starting to reach him, and he knew it wouldn’t be long. His story had held the other’s attention, and that was enough. Even though it had made no sense. Even if Trowa didn’t believe him. Which it seemed might be the case, as the aforementioned man was now looking at him like he had two heads.

“Ri…ridiculous,” Trowa managed. Just a few more minutes, Trowa. Hold on.

“No way, man. Totally true. Of course, I’d already stolen a boat and beaten both of you there, so I won the prize.” Hurry up, you stupid fucking driver!!!

“What… prize…?”

“Why, the Princess, of course!” Come on, Tro. I think that was almost a smile. That’s it. Keep going.

“Princess?”

“Of course. That’s what you always win on a quest. And she was very beautiful and very smart and very rich….”

“…”

“And her name was Relena.” There it was again - a ghost of a smile. God, what a beautiful sight.

“And as a reward for my bravery and skill she bought me a delicious, lovely Trowa of my very own.” Stay with me, baby. They’re almost here.

“B…bought?”

“Well, yes. It seems this poor, exhausted Trowa had washed up on the beach with no clothes and no money and the nasty local slavers found him and decided to try to get what they could for the poor half-drowned wretch.”

“…”

“And Princess Relena was most generous, of course, so she paid a handsome price for him, and everyone was happy. Expect for the surly, muddy wild man with the bloody knees. No one wanted to buy him because he smelled like bloated fish and he was finally given away in a two for one deal along with a…. OK, Tro. The paramedics are here. Everything’s going to be okay now. You just hold on, okay?” Duo squeezed his hand once then let go to give room to the emergency workers. Trowa followed him with his eyes, a needy look on his face.

“Along…with a what?” he demanded softly. Bingo!

“Ahhhhh, you’re just going to have to wait until you’re better to find that out!” Ha! Always leave them wanting more. The old show business adage. Surprising that Trowa of all people should fall for that one!

I'm really sorry that your body isn't keeping up with your travel plans and desires. Yar. But thank you for sharing this snippet! Trowa/Duo is one of my favorite flavors of GW fic, and this has me intrigued about where it came from and where it's going. Even if you don't wind up going back to it seriously, I hope you'll consider sharing more snippets here and there.

Thanks for the sympathy and the feedback!! So glad you enjoyed the snippet. It's great to find others who enjoy the occasional Trowa/Duo. And I'm not telling what Hee-chan gets traded with - mostly because I couldn't decide. I was leaning toward a 12-year-old she-goat with a goiter and a lame knee, but that just didn't seem wretched enough. :)

I might consider posting more pieces, though I really HATE reading unfinished fics, so I am reluctant to start posting them myself. But knowing there's someone out there who wants to read it might encourage me to finish it. :P

Sorry to hear you are having to come back early, but it will be nice to have you around again! *crosses fingers that your doctor will be able to figure out what is wrong and fix it*

Thanks!! It will be fun to be back in internet range during a time when I have no classes to feel guilty about blowing off!! :)

(I'm crossing my fingers too! I really need to find someone who won't just tell me to take some advil and some tums and send me on my way.)

Downtime with a computer sounds good. *waits for ficcage*

Having your regular doc who knows your history has to be an advantage I would think.

Funny, that combo did lead to some ficcage. Huh. Hope I didn't keep you waiting too long! Now if only I could apply it to my longer, half-done ficcage instead writing new, quickie fics. Oh well. Something's better than nothing, right?

Yeah, if I had a regular doc I'd go to him/her, but I haven't had the same doctor for more than 2 years since I was a kid. Back in Boston they kept leaving for maternity leave or just plain leaving, and now in grad school I basically just go to the campus clinic where the doctor turnover rivals the students. Ahhhh, the fabulous state of health care these days! I'm sure I'll find someone stable that my insurance will pay for... eventually!

That's always the problem isn't it? New ideas will show up while the ones you need to work on are hanging out on street corners mocking you.

*crosses fingers on the doctor*

Oh darlin! I feel HORRIBLE for you! And the lack of museaum sucketh.

Now, I'm not USUALLY a 2x3 fan, but this was Cute with a capital "C"!! I really agree with the Heero and Trowa differences (although I never saw how Trowa's mellow and sweet would work with Duo's hyper and underhanded, but I HAVE seen it done before)

Great work!

Thanks for the kind thoughts! <3 Museum lack definitely sucketh. :)

*Grins* Glad you enjoyed this. 'Cute' is a kind word for it (I was prepared for 'cheezy' and 'schmaltzy'). And I agree - they are a tricky pairing. I can definitely not see them ever getting together during the war, but I always think, given the right set of circumstance and experiences, they could just very possibly get together later. Because I think deep down below the hyper and underhanded Duo is sweet too, and they could be good for each other. Or strangle each other inside of five minutes. It's a toss-up.

Oh, Lukoni! This is adorable and funny and pretty gosh-derned angsty, too. I can't stop giggling about poor angry, bloated fish smelling, cut up kneed Heero.

I think your Duo did a good job of showing the different characters of Trowa and Heero with his fairy tale (there are still too many fandom claims of Heero and Trowa being somehow 'the same') - Trowa's serenity especially. <3 Oh, Trowa! I hope he's okay.

Glad I was in some manner inspiring! Sorry for taking so long with the feedback. Thank you for sharing! :D <3<3<3

Thank you very much!! Such great feedback! *hugs* Funny and angsty? COOL! (Snickers at doing that to poor Heero. That's what happens when you piss off Duo, Hee-chan!) And don't worry about Trowa - he'll be fine. I hate writing deathfics.

Glad you liked the Heero/Trowa distinction - they are definitely not the same even though they both don't talk much. One of my favorite things about GW is how the 5 main characters really have their own distinct personalities. I think that's one of the reasons there's such a rich fanfic life for them. I know other shows try to achieve this too (like Weiss Kreuz) but somehow I never feel they reach beyond 'character type' to actual 'personality'. Or perhaps I'm just reading too much into things.... I do that a lot! :)

High five for inspiration! That's one of the great things about sharing work on the net. We can feed off each other. *Grabs knife and fork and heads out into the ether*

2x3 FTW! My favorite pairing is, unfortunately, one of the rarest. This was adorable and a very fun read.

Thanks so much!! (Sorry for the delayed reply... I've been bogged down with RL lately) Go 2x3!! Definitely a lesser-written pairing, but I like to let my Trowa play with everyone at least once. ;) So glad you liked it, and thanks for commenting!

How do you do it? You do this amazingly complex thing of being able to write heart wrenching 'Aws!' with desperate 'Oh noes!' so fluidly and with such ease.

Thanks!!! I'm honored you find this complex! I try very hard not to veer too far into melodrama but the wounded lover scenario is so hard to resist. :)
